Chat Travieso is an artist, designer, and researcher, as well as co-founder of the multidisciplinary collaborative practice Yeju & Chat, with Yeju Choi. He creates participatory, architectural, and research-based projects that reinforce social bonds in public spaces and interrogate the histories and policies that have shaped the built environment.
His past work has been commissioned by or organized in collaboration with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Architectural League of New York, NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation, the Cleveland Public Library, the Cambridge Arts Council, and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Travieso’s research has been supported by grants from the Graham Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts. His writing has been featured in Places Journal, AD (Architectural Design), MAS Context, and Urban Omnibus. His artist residencies include LMCC Process Space, Smack Mellon Studio Program, and the Elsewhere Museum. Honors include a Columbia GSAPP Anti-Racism Curriculum Development Award, NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design with Yeju Choi, YoungArts Jorge M. Pérez Award, and United States Artist Fellowship in Architecture & Design.
Travieso is currently the Tepper Chair in Visual Arts at Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts. He was the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professor of Architectural Design at Yale School of Architecture. He has also previously taught at Columbia GSAPP, Parsons School of Design, City College of New York, Queens College, Pratt Institute, and as part of Dark Matter U. Travieso is a past Faculty Fellow for the Mellon Initiative for Inclusive Faculty Excellence at The New School, as well as a Participatory Design Fellow at Design Trust for Public Space. He is the co-creator of the Wall (In) program at Arts for Learning/Miami. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Architecture from Yale University.
